Parachute Rigging FAQ
Why
you need a rigger…
Riggers pack parachutes and do much more. The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) certifies Senior and Master Riggers.
FAA regulations mandate that reserve parachutes and pilot
emergency parachutes be inspected and repacked every 120
days or after use. Experienced FAA Certified Riggers are
qualified to inspect, repair and repack reserve canopies
and harness/containers.
FAA inspection standards require riggers to confirm that
parachutes and harness/containers comply with all airworthiness
directives and service bulletins. Manufacturer inspection
and testing/packing requirements are followed throughout
the inspection/repacking process.
Riggers modify and repair skydiving gear. They also repair
jumpsuits, steering toggles, links, lines, deployment bats,
helmets, pilot chutes, goggles, and more.
Parachute Place Rigging Loft's excellent standards are unparalleled
in the industry.

Reserve Canopies
Parachute Place requires all metal link utilizing sport reserve canopies to
have either fabric, vinyl or silicone slider bumpers. Bumpers will be installed
on all canopies that do not have them. Bumpers keep metal links centered on
the risers and, during reserve deployment, they keep the lines centered on
the links.
Performance Designs mandates that its reserve canopies have
annual 30-pound fabric strength tests. Canopies with stains
of unknown origin will be subject to a fabric strength test.
Reserves that do not have strength requirements will also
be tested annually.
AADs
To be repacked, Cypres I batteries must be less than 2 years old. All Cypres
units require 4 and 8-year services. Cypres units older than 12 years are not
considered airworthy.
Vigil batteries are replaced at 4 year intervals or in the
event the unit indicates “Bat Low” or “Bat Rpl.” Vigil batteries
do not have manufacturer designated service requirements
or lifespan limits.
At each repack, FXC Astra units will have a functional test
and applicable software updates. Astra batteries must be
replaced when a solid light displays or when the unit fails
to turn on.
Main
Canopies
All attached main canopies will be removed during reserve inspection and repack.
All packed main canopies will be reattached. Following reserve inspection, they
may be opened and repacked to ensure line continuity. Unless otherwise requested,
unpacked main canopies will be repacked. When repacking main canopies, riggers
will conduct a line check, untwist steering lines, replace rubber bands as necessary,
and conduct a general inspection.
Gear Life Span
Skydiving gear 15 to 25 years old should be retired. Parachute Place will not
service gear older than 25 years.
